windowless study XLII

When the dog fell asleep beneath the tree he immediately began dreaming of something unrelated to humans. The dream was a vicious one and the dog responded in the correct manner - that is to say he shook like a fiend and ferrociously kicked out at his invisible tormentors. It seemed that this wasn´t sufficient to keep the spirits at bay because he began howling as only a dog in the throes of a canine nightmare can howl. Mrs Alvarado´s geraniums were the first to go, falling the twenty-five feet from her window ledge and hitting the deck with such force that the terracotta sprayed half-a-mile in all directions. This was followed by Mr Herrero´s window and a small but extremely animated child. God knows where the latter appeared from but his luck was great because he landed silently on the back of the dog, got to his tiny feet and walked away in a slightly bewildered but completely unharmed state. The dog awoke from his tortures, chewed on the tree trunk awhile, and himself walked away as if nothing had happened. And that´s all.
